Nicholas Nixon, the photographer of the portrait series, took the first portrait of his wife and her three sisters back in 1975. At that time, he had no idea it would turn into a project that would take 40 years. The following year, during the graduation of one of the sisters, Nicholas suggested the sisters to pose in the same order as last year’s portrait. That’s how it all started.
We do not know much about the Brown sisters, but we do know their names. They are Heather, Mimi, Bebe and Laurie (from left to right). Bebe is Nixon’s wife. As you browse through the portrait series, you would be amazed by the powerful transformation of the sisters. Each picture tells us something unique, from the sisters’ interaction, their gazes, and their facial expressions. The last photo of them is absolutely amazing.
1975, New Canaan, Conn.
